THE LOVE DIET

Dan Mahony, M.Phil. & Martha Brassil B.A., D.Th.Dip.

"The M stands for McDonald’s, but the rounded m represents mummy’s mammaries, acccording the design consultant and psychologist Louis Cheskin. In the 1960's McDonald's was prepared to abandon this logo, but Cheskin successfully urged the company to maintain this branding with its Freudian symbolism of a pair of nourishing breasts BBC."

Even before we were born, we were simultaneously loved and fed as we floated in our mothers' wombs. After birth, we were held and gently rocked as our food and emotional needs continued to be simultaneously satisfied. As children we were rewarded with carbohydrates for being 'good', and as medication to make us feel better when angry or hurt.

As adults we do these things for ourselves. We still deeply link food, especially carbohydrates, with emotional fulfillment, and still use food as medication for anger and hurt.

It's earliest dawn. We begin a journey away from the negative-emotion plane. And out of the spiral of medicating ourselves with foods and drinks which increase our appetites and worsen how we feel.

Chapter One          IT BEGINS IN OUR CELLS              Martha Brassil

There is a definite link between how you feel and the condition of your cells. If you think of one of your cells as a microcosm of your total self, then you can see how it can affect every aspect of your being. When the cell is open and permeable you can feel happy, energetic and optimistic. When the cell is closed off and blocked you can feel depressed, lacking in energy, and pessimistic. Not only does the condition of the cells affect you physically, but also emotionally and spiritually.

The foods we eat, the addictive substances we take, and the lifestyle you lead all affect the condition of the cells. I have repeatedly found that unless the condition of the cells is addressed the effectiveness of all other wellness plans is undermined.

The healthy cell is permeable. This means that nutrients are able to pass into it efficiently to be absorbed and likewise the toxic by-products of metabolism are eliminated. When the cell is in a healthy condition the polarity of the cell is correct, i.e., there is intracellular potassium and magnesium and there is extra-cellular sodium and calcium. The cell in this condition is healthy and the person functions optimally both physically and emotionally.

The unhealthy cell is not permeable. This means that the nutrients are less able to get into the cell and toxic waste tends to build up inside. In this case the polarity of the cell becomes distorted with sodium and calcium going inside the cell and magnesium and potassium being lost.

How do the foods we eat affect our moods? Well the answer to this question is revealed by the concept of oxidation. The unhealthy cell is unable to oxidize properly. When the cell is blocked there is a lack of oxygen getting to the cells. In this condition the person tends to go for the foods and substances that will give him or her fast but unhealthy oxidation. The result is that for a short time the cell becomes permeable with the minerals being shunted into the right place and the person feels well. The cell is literally forced into faster oxidation but the result is that the cell becomes more depleted of nutrients soon after.

Some foods favor the opening and expansion of the cell whereas other foods are blocking and contracting. If for example you are attracted to the salty processed foods, i.e., those that are blocking and contracting, then this means that the polarity of your cells is reversed as we always tend to crave what is not available in the blood stream. The unhealthy cell is invariably attracted to the unhealthy diet for a reason. The unhealthy cell is unable to oxidize optimally so the person is driven to seeking the foods and substances to counteract this problem. However this becomes a vicious spiral that can only culminate in ill health and depression.

The foods that favor cell expansion are potassium rich and high in water: Apples, pears, bananas, kiwis, peaches, plums, grapes, apricots, dried fruits. Also green leafy vegetables, potatoes, parsley, celery, carrots, lettuce, peppers, cucumbers, squash, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, peas and beans.

In order for the potassium to get inside the cell it is necessary to take it coupled with magnesium as magnesium and potassium travel best together and magnesium tends to keep the potassium inside the cell. If I could advise you to take magnesium rich foods then I would, but unfortunately artificial fertilizers tend to lock the magnesium into the soil and make it unavailable for use by the plants. Hence it is important when you are looking at ways of opening the cell to take a magnesium supplement along with the potassium rich foods.

Magnesium is an extremely important mineral. The National Institute of Health (NIH) reports that a sign of magnesium deficiency is depression.

Foods that are high in water encourage the opening of the cells as water is the delivery system for to get the nutrients to the cell and to remove the toxicity. (Link to dehydration at cell-free.com)

Good quality protein also causes healthy oxidation as protein provides the fire energy to the body. Examples of good quality protein are lean cuts of meat, poultry and fish.

Countries that have the least amount of light use fish oils that are rich in omega-3 oils to encourage oxidation and to keep the cells open to whatever light is available. It is ironic to note the high use of alcohol in northern countries to encourage oxidation. Alcohol is the most popular antidepressant drug used by mankind. The problem is that in its aftermath the cells become more rigid and more closed off, so the more one drinks alcohol the more one needs to drink it.

Foods which contain the omega-3 oils, nature's antidepressants, include cod-liver oil, flax oil, green leafy vegetables and walnuts.  chart

Exercise increases oxidation, and increases detoxification via sweating. This is a very effective way of eliminating toxicity from the cells.

The foods that lead to the contraction and the blocking of the cell are as follows.

Foods high in sodium and calcium and refined sugars tend to close off the cell. These foods come with a double-edged sword because they ultimately fail to satisfy the appetite and increase it instead. List of Trigger Foods

Dairy foods are blocking to the cell: milk, yogurt, ice cream, cheese.

It is ironic to think that the countries which tend to eat the most dairy products are the ones who suffer from the most osteoporosis and breast cancer. The countries which eat the most dairy also need the most alcohol to temporarily counter the closing off effects of dairy.

Foods  high in salt, such as most processed commercial foods tend to block the cells. People are attracted to salt because of its stimulating energy but the end result is that it deposits inside the cell lowering its electrical potential.

Too much wheat contracts the cell mostly because wheat is quite a difficult grain to digest because of the way it is commercially grown today. Wheat also has a lot of added salt. Wheat is also high in gluten which can leave a sticky gluey residue behind in the cells.

The combination of salty, calcium rich foods tend to lower the oxidation within the cells and cause its contraction. This is because they are dehydrating to the body and tend to use up whatever water is in the system. Water is essential to the opening of the cell and by depleting water we are affecting the permeability of the cells.

Likewise the ingestion of calcium tablets will close down the cell and can lead to disease states such as cancer.

The closed off cell is in a state of slow oxidation which means that the energy of the cell is seriously depleted. This affects us on all levels, physical, mental and emotional.
