afterlife research

Dan Mahony, M.Phil.

------------------

After millions of reports of out-of-body consciousness and afterlife experience,
it's time to approach this subject in a fairly scientific way.
No philosophy or religion is advocated.

Similarities in Reports of Afterlife Experience

  • The self continues to exist
  •
  • Existence of other selves and communication with them
  • Experience of a pervasive and intense love, well-being, happiness, lack of fear, and extremely vivid visual experience
  •
  • Nonjudgmental review of one's life
  •
  • They are told they "must go back" or "their time has not yet come" or they are "not ready"...then experiencing returning to bodily existence
  •
  • Some choose to come back, or are told they must do so
  •
  • Positive changes in the person after return to this life (e.g., more loving, less fear).

Do Afterlife Reports Qualify As Fairly Scientific Evidence?

A big problem for afterlife researchers is to find so-called 'hard' scientific evidence.

\

Yes.

  • The reports have been made by persons of all ages, and who are generally unknown to one another
  •
  • Most reports are randomly accumulated, e.g., on websites, hospital records
  •
  • Often an afterlife experience follows a random event such as an accident
  •
  • The large number of reports is of statistical benefit
  •
  • Children's reports have added value because they are naïve in a scientific sense
  •
  • There are many reports made by hospital patients who had observed surgical operations on themselves while unconscious on the operating table, these reports being later verified by hospital staff, family members, et al.

"What is particularly fascinating about these experiences is their great similarity to the NDEs experienced by grown adults, but often without the associated sociological and religious conditioning that adults often possess. In children too young to have absorbed our adult views and ideas of death, we hear first hand accounts of out of body travel, telepathic communication, and encounters with dead friends and relatives."  Dr. Melvin Morse
