Two Non-drug Antidepressants

Hypericin (St. John's Wört)

Several studies of this abundant herb have shown positive results in treating persons with mild to moderate depression. Improvement was shown for symptoms of sadness, helplessness, hopelessness, anxiety, headache and exhaustion.

It is a bushy perennial plant with numerous yellow flowers. It is native to many parts of the world including Europe and the United States. It has a 2,400-year history of safe and effective usage in many folk and herbal remedies. Historically used as a nerve tonic, St. John's Wort is now widely used as a mild antidepressant.

In Germany, nearly half of depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders are treated with hypericin. It should not be taken with any other antidepressants, it is not effective for severe depression, and no one should stop taking any prescribed medications for depression without medical advice.

New rigorous scientific study finds St. John's Wort as effective as popular prescription drug Source.

Chromium

Chromium is a mineral necessary for healthy nutrition, and for many overweight persons serves as a safe over-the-counter anti-depressant. It is not found in the soil of most countries, so nine in ten persons around the world have a diet deficient in it.

Many persons report that Chromium helps to control appetite, especially sugar and caffeine craving. The theory is that chromium sensitizes the "glucostat" in the brain that "tells" the body when it's hungry or not hungry. Recent studies have shown that the combination of caffeine and sugar inhibit the brain's ability to do this.

In addition, Chromium helps to preserve muscle in dieters so that they lose more fat and less muscle. It also promotes efficient metabolism by aiding the body's heat-producing ability.
